Historic Tuckahoe is a preserved colonial plantation house west of Richmond, best known as the childhood home of Thomas Jefferson. The grounds are the easiest part to visit, with gardens, outbuildings, and a setting that makes the scale of Virginia plantation life plain.
House tours are limited, so check current hours before making the trip. Even without a tour, it is a worthwhile stop for travellers following early American history around Richmond.
