White House of the Confederacy

Jefferson Davis lived in this neoclassical mansion from 1861 to 1865 while serving as president of the Confederacy. The building has been carefully restored to its Civil War-period appearance and contains the largest collection of Confederate artifacts in the world: furniture, uniforms, documents, weapons, and personal effects of Davis and other Confederate leaders. The house is attached to the Museum of the Confederacy, now incorporated into the American Civil War Museum system.

The museum presents Confederate history with more contextual honesty than you might expect: the causes of the war are not elided, and the consequences for enslaved people are part of the story. It's a serious historical site, not a celebration of the Lost Cause.
