Daniel Boone Hotel

1929 hotel-turned-office building on Virginia Street

The Daniel Boone Hotel, on the corner of Virginia and Hale Streets, was Charleston's grandest hotel for forty years and is now one of downtown's most distinctive office buildings. The neo-Georgian brick facade, terracotta detailing, and recessed ground-floor arches make it stand out among the more functional buildings around it.

The lobby still has its original marble floors and brass fixtures and is open during business hours. A small plaque inside marks the spot where, the story goes, the 1932 Republican governor's election was decided after a long night of bargaining.

A story
When the Daniel Boone Hotel opened in 1929 it was the tallest building in West Virginia — a 10-storey hotel designed to accommodate legislators and the lobbyists who followed them. It was converted to offices in 1968 after the city's central hotel trade collapsed, but the lobby and exterior are largely original.
