St. John's Episcopal Church

1888 Gothic Revival church in downtown

St. John's Episcopal Church, on Quarrier Street downtown, is the oldest continuously used church in Charleston — the current Gothic Revival sandstone building dates from 1888, though the congregation was founded in 1838. The square corner tower and the small rose window above the entrance are among the most photographed features of the city centre.

The interior preserves an unusually fine collection of Tiffany stained glass — eleven windows in total — and a hand-carved wooden reredos. The church is generally open during weekdays for quiet visits and welcomes guests at services.
