The Sunrise Carriage Trail climbs the wooded hillside on the south bank of the Kanawha through what was once the private estate of William A. MacCorkle, the ninth governor of West Virginia. The 0.7-mile gravel path is part of the wider Sunrise grounds that also include Cato Park and the now-closed Sunrise Museum.
The trail is wide and well-graded — passable in sneakers — and ends at a small clearing with views across the river to downtown. Spring (April redbud and dogwood) and autumn (mid-October hardwoods) are the prettiest times. Accessible by a small parking lot off Bridge Road.
