Estadio Monumental José Fierro

Home to Club Atlético Tucumán, this football stadium — nicknamed Monumental — holds around 35,000 spectators and is the largest in northwestern Argentina. It opened in 1922 and has been progressively rebuilt over the decades, most recently for Tucumán's participation in the Copa Libertadores. Match days are intense: a sea of blue and white shirts, drum-heavy fan chants, and the local rivalry with San Martín de Tucumán bringing a genuine edge to derby matches.

Even if you are not a football fan, attending a game in Argentina is a cultural experience worth seeking out — and the atmosphere at Atlético Tucumán is more authentic and less touristy than at the big Buenos Aires clubs. Tickets are sold at the stadium box office on match days; arrive early and ask locals which sector to sit in. The stadium is about two kilometres northeast of the centre.
