Home of Club Atlético San Martín de Tucumán, La Ciudadela is the smaller of the city's two main football grounds, with capacity for about 28,000. It sits in the western district of Ciudadela, a few kilometres from the centre. The stadium has been the focal point of one of Argentina's more passionate provincial rivalries — the clásico tucumano against Atlético Tucumán is among the most intensely contested derbies outside Buenos Aires.
Match days draw fans from across the province; the surrounding streets fill with food vendors, flags, and chanting hours before kickoff. If your visit coincides with a home game, it is well worth experiencing. The neighbourhood is also home to a small park and is a convenient stop on the way to the western edge of the city.
