The main square of Tucumán is the heart of the city, a leafy block lined with palms, jacarandas, and government buildings. A statue of Liberty stands at its centre, surrounded by benches where porteños, students, and shoeshine boys gather through the day. The square is busiest on 9 July, Argentine Independence Day, when bands play and crowds fill every corner.
From the plaza you can reach almost every important monument in the city in under five minutes. The cathedral, government palace, and Casa Histórica are all within a block or two. In the early evening the square comes alive as families and friends gather for the daily paseo before dinner — a good time to grab an empanada from one of the nearby kiosks and watch the city settle into its night.
