Basílica de La Merced

The most important pilgrimage church in Tucumán, home to the small wooden statue of the Virgen de la Merced, patron of the city. The statue was given the rank of Generala in 1812 after General Belgrano credited her with the victory at the Battle of Tucumán — his own marshal's baton, which he laid at her feet in thanks, is still kept in the church.

The current building was rebuilt in the 19th century after the original colonial church collapsed.
