Cidade Administrativa

Niemeyer's late masterwork — the spreading concrete state government complex north of the city

The Cidade Administrativa Presidente Tancredo Neves is Oscar Niemeyer's last major architectural project — a vast state government complex on the northern edge of the metropolitan area, completed in 2010. The central building, the Palácio Tiradentes, is a long horizontal slab raised on six massive concrete pillars, hovering more than 145 metres clear of the ground from one end to the other.

It is not a tourist site in the usual sense — most of the buildings are working government offices — but the central palace and its surrounding plaza are open to the public and visiting it adds an important late chapter to a tour of Niemeyer's career. The trip out is about thirty minutes by taxi from the centre. Best done in combination with a Pampulha morning.

A story
The Cidade Administrativa was Niemeyer's last major built project, completed in 2010 when the architect was 102 years old. The main palace block — supported on just six enormous concrete columns and stretching 145 metres without any internal supports — is one of the most ambitious cantilevered structures in the world.
