Comida di Buteco

Annual citywide bar food festival in April and May — the institutional expression of Belo Horizonte's bar obsession

Comida di Buteco is the annual celebration of Belo Horizonte's bar culture — a six-week food festival in April and May during which dozens of botecos across the city create a special new petisco for the competition. Customers visit as many participating bars as they can, eat the dish, vote on a printed scorecard, and the results are tallied at the end of the period.

For visitors who happen to be in town during the festival, it is the best possible time to dive into the city's bar scene: every participating bar has clear festival signage outside, the dishes are new (and often surprisingly inventive), and the bars are buzzing every night. Worth planning a visit around if you can.

A story
The Comida di Buteco competition began in Belo Horizonte in 2000 and is now run in 24 cities across Brazil — but Belo Horizonte remains the spiritual home. Around seventy bars in the city compete each year by creating a new petisco; an army of judges and customers visit them all, and the votes decide the winner.
