Museu de Minas e Metal

Modern interactive museum on mining, metals, and Minas Gerais's geology

The Museum of Mines and Metal occupies the former state finance building on Praça da Liberdade, beautifully restored with a new glass-and-steel atrium grafted into the older shell. Inside, the displays cover Minas Gerais's geological history (the state has some of the richest mineral deposits in the world), the history of mining from the colonial gold rush onwards, and the role of iron and steel in twentieth-century Brazilian industry.

The exhibits are unusually interactive for Brazil — touchscreens, scale models, working machines — and the museum is one of the more child-friendly stops in the city. The atrium cafe on the top floor has a good view back across the Praça.
