The Catedral Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem is, despite its modest size, the official cathedral of the archdiocese of Belo Horizonte. Built in red brick in a restrained neo-Gothic style and consecrated in 1932, it sits a few blocks south of the centro on Avenida Afonso Pena. The interior is bright and uncluttered, with a few good stained-glass windows.
The church is named for an earlier chapel that stood on the same site in the village of Curral del Rei — the settlement that Belo Horizonte replaced when the new state capital was laid out in the 1890s. A few stones from the older building are preserved in the cathedral garden.
