The Niemeyer Building (Edifício Niemeyer) is a long, gently curving residential block by Oscar Niemeyer that occupies an entire block on the western edge of Praça da Liberdade. Built between 1955 and 1960, it was one of Niemeyer's first large urban residential commissions and helped set the template for the high-rise apartment buildings that have since defined the city's skyline.
The building remains private — most of its 22 storeys are still apartments — but the curving facade is one of the defining views of Praça da Liberdade. The ground floor includes a couple of cafes that spill onto the pavement, which makes for a good vantage point.
