Palácio das Artes

City's main performing-arts complex on the southern edge of Parque Municipal

Palácio das Artes is the main performing arts complex of Belo Horizonte — three concert and theatre halls, a cinemathèque, two art galleries, and a craft centre, all under one modernist roof on the southern edge of Parque Municipal. The building opened in 1971 and is the centre of cultural life in the city.

The galleries cycle through major touring shows and Brazilian retrospectives. The big theatre, Grande Teatro Cecília Meireles, hosts the resident symphony, the state ballet, and visiting opera. Pick up a programme on arrival — the calendar is varied enough that something is almost always on.
