Iglesia San Agustín

Iglesia San Agustín is one of Santiago's oldest churches, tucked into the busy centre rather than set apart as a monument. Its main draw is the Cristo de Mayo, a colonial crucifix linked to one of the city's best-known earthquake legends: after a 17th-century tremor, the crown of thorns slipped to Christ's neck, and tradition says moving it back would bring another quake.

The church is worth a short detour while walking between Plaza de Armas, La Moneda, and Cerro Santa Lucía. Inside, the mood is quieter than the streets outside, with colonial religious art that feels more intimate than grand.
