A small permanent craft market next to the Stabroek Market clocktower, the Hibiscus Plaza is the easiest place in Georgetown to pick up Amerindian basketry, hammocks, carved wooden animals, and other handicrafts. Prices are moderate and most vendors will negotiate gently.
The Wai-Wai and Wapishana basketry from the southern Rupununi is the most distinctive offering — tight-woven palm-fibre baskets in geometric patterns that take days each to make. Look for items with provenance information, which tend to be better made and fairer to the original craftspeople.
