Moyobamba

High Amazon capital of orchids, hot springs, and cloud-forest birding in northern Peru.

Moyobamba sits in Peru's upper Amazon, warm and green but higher and less heavy than the lowland jungle. It calls itself the City of Orchids, and for once the nickname is not empty: orchid gardens, hummingbirds, and birding lodges are part of the town's real travel identity.

The town is also a useful pause on the road between Tarapoto and the northern Andes. You can soak at San Mateo Hot Springs, climb Morro de Calzada for a valley view, or spend a slow morning at Waqanki Orchid Garden.

Moyobamba is not slick. Mototaxis buzz through town, the evenings are relaxed, and many of the best outings require early starts or local transport. Give it a day or two if you like plants, birds, hot water, and places that feel more Amazonian than Andean.
