El Mouradia is the elevated residential and government quarter above the French colonial centre. The Presidential Palace is here, as are several embassies and the foreign ministry. The area has wide tree-lined avenues, a quieter pace than the city centre, and some of the city's better restaurants catering to the diplomatic and business community.
The views from El Mouradia down to the bay and the lower city are excellent — the neighbourhood sits on the lip of the amphitheatre that gives Algiers its distinctive shape. On weekend mornings the streets are very quiet and good for walking.
