Place Audin

Place Audin is the central public square of modern Algiers, used as a meeting point and the departure point for street protests and celebrations. The square is at the top of the escalator that links the lower and upper city and serves as a node in the tram and bus network.

The square itself is not architecturally remarkable but it is consistently lively — students, office workers, street vendors, political arguments. The free escalator from here up to Riadh El Feth and the Martyrs' Memorial makes this the most convenient starting point for exploring the upper city.

A story
The square was renamed after Maurice Audin, a French communist mathematics lecturer at the University of Algiers who was arrested by French paratroopers in 1957 and never seen again. In 2018 French President Emmanuel Macron officially acknowledged that Audin had been tortured and killed by the French army — one of the few official admissions of atrocities committed during the battle of Algiers.
