The coastal stretch east of Algiers — sometimes called the Turquoise Coast — runs from the city limits through a series of rocky bays and small sandy coves to the town of Tixeraine and beyond. The scenery is more dramatic than the flat western beaches: the Atlas foothills push close to the sea, and the coves are backed by pine trees and cork oaks.
Boat trips, sailing and fishing are available from several small harbours along this stretch. The swimming is generally good in the sheltered bays. The road east follows the coast closely enough that you can stop at any cove that looks appealing. The further east you go, the quieter it becomes.
