The Escaliers du Bey — the Bey's Stairs — are one of the principal pedestrian routes through the Casbah, a long staircase connecting the port area to the upper levels of the old city. The stairs are narrow, lined by whitewashed walls, and offer glimpses into the lives of the neighbourhood: laundry, children, cats, occasional conversation through open doorways.
The climb is steep but manageable. The stairs are best in the morning, when the light is clear and the neighbourhood is beginning its day. At the top you emerge into the middle Casbah, within easy reach of several of the Ottoman palaces and the Ketchaoua Mosque.
