Port of Algiers

The port of Algiers is the largest in Algeria and one of the major shipping hubs of the Mediterranean. The seafront promenade along the port — the Boulevard Che Guevara — gives good views of the harbour and the city rising steeply behind it. The white buildings of the Casbah and the French colonial centre stacking up the hillside from the waterfront are the defining image of Algiers from the sea.

Arriving by ferry from Marseille or Alicante is the best way to appreciate the city's geography: the natural amphitheatre of hills enclosing the bay is immediately clear, and the approach by sea replicates the view that has greeted visitors for centuries. The port itself is not usually open to casual visitors, but the seafront is a good walking and cycling route.
