One of the best-preserved Ottoman palaces in the Casbah, Dar Hassan Pacha was built in the late 18th century as the residence of the Ottoman regent. The building displays the characteristic North African palace style: a blank exterior that gives nothing away from the street, concealing a sequence of richly decorated courtyards within. Marble columns, painted ceilings, Italian tiles and carved plasterwork are all in good condition.
Access is not always straightforward — the palace is used for various official functions and opening hours are irregular. If you can get in, it is one of the finest examples of domestic Ottoman architecture in the city and worth considerable effort.
