Notre Dame d'Afrique

Clifftop neo-Byzantine basilica with Black Virgin Mary statue

This Roman Catholic basilica perches on a cliff in northern Algiers, overlooking the bay. Built in 1872 in a neo-Byzantine style, it contains a striking statue of a Black Virgin Mary. Inscriptions appear in French, Berber and Arabic — a reflection of the city's layered history. There are no signs to the church, so you may need to ask for directions, but the climb is worth it for the views alone.
