The Martyrs' Memorial stands over 90 metres tall on a ridge above the city, built in 1982 to honour those who died in the Algerian War of Independence. Three concrete palm leaves rise to form an eternal flame, and the monument is visible from almost anywhere in Algiers. The adjacent Mujahid Museum covers the history of the independence struggle.
