The Avenida Marginal is the seafront boulevard that runs from the eastern edge of Polana north-east to the Costa do Sol, hugging the curve of Maputo Bay. The Marginal is the city's most-used outdoor recreation space — early in the morning and at sunset it fills with joggers, cyclists, dog-walkers and exercise groups working out in the open-air gyms set up along the promenade.
The road itself was extensively rebuilt in the 2010s, with separate lanes for cyclists, runners and pedestrians on the bay side. There are a number of cafés and restaurants spaced along the route, including the long-running Mundo's and Café del Rio. It is also the easiest way to walk from Polana out to the Mercado do Peixe if you have an hour and a hat.
