Tunduru Gardens

Botanical gardens of 1885 with old fig trees, statues and a working palm collection

The Jardim Tunduru (Tunduru Gardens) is the green core of central Maputo — a small but mature botanical garden laid out in 1885 by the English landscape gardener Thomas Honney. The layout follows the formal Victorian style: looping paths, statues on plinths, sculpted lawns and an avenue of date palms. The trees, more than a century old now, are the real attraction: huge banyans, a baobab, a stand of Madagascar travellers' palms, and several specimens that turn up nowhere else in central Maputo.

The garden is also the home of the Casa de Ferro, which sits on the upper corner, and the National Library building on its lower edge. The benches under the figs are popular with students from the nearby university. It is one of the few outdoor places in the centre to escape the heat without retreating into a café.
