Praça da Independência

The colonnaded civic square that holds the cathedral, City Hall and a heroic statue of Samora Machel

The Praça da Independência is Maputo's main civic square — a wide open plaza framed by the white Art Deco facade of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, the pale Maputo City Hall with its neoclassical portico, and the pink-and-white Iron House on the corner. On weekends it fills with families, ice-cream sellers and skateboarders.

The square sits at the head of Avenida Samora Machel and is the natural starting point for a walk through the colonial Baixa. The cathedral, finished in 1944, is unusually severe — pale concrete with a single sharp spire — and the interior is cool and stripped-back; visit between services if you want to wander.

A story
The bronze statue at the centre of the square is **Samora Machel**, Mozambique's first president and FRELIMO commander, killed in a 1986 plane crash near the South African border that an Apartheid-era investigation found suspicious. The statue was unveiled in 2011, twenty-five years after his death; a Soviet-era statue of Lenin in the same spot was quietly removed in 1990.
