FEIMA Craft Market

Open-air craft market in Praça 25 de Junho — the best one-stop for Mozambican woodcarving and fabric

The Feira Popular de Artesanato, Flores e Gastronomia — FEIMA for short — is Maputo's largest and friendliest craft market, occupying the shaded lawns of Praça 25 de Junho in Polana. It runs daily, with the biggest crowds on Saturday mornings.

Stalls sell carved Makonde figures and masks, batik wall hangings, capulanas (the brilliant printed cotton wraps worn across Mozambique), straw work, basketry and silver jewellery. Several small food stalls do prego sandwiches and grilled chicken. Prices are negotiable — start at half what is asked — and the standard of carving is high; this is one of the few places in the country where you can buy directly from the Makonde and Shangaan artisans who make the pieces.
