Cape Sierra Leone

Rocky headland at the tip of Aberdeen with views back over the city and ocean

Cape Sierra Leone is the rocky headland at the northwestern tip of the peninsula. It marks the entrance to the great natural harbour and gave the country its name — the Portuguese explorer Pedro de Sintra called it Serra Leoa, "lion mountains", in 1462, supposedly for the thunder over the hills behind.

The lighthouse at the tip is decommissioned but the headland makes a pleasant walk, with views east over the city and west out to the open Atlantic. A handful of small bars and restaurants cluster near the cape itself. Sunset is the time to come.
