The original Fourah Bay College building, finished in 1845, stands as a romantic vine-covered ruin on the waterfront at Cline Town. Several of its arched windows and the central facade have survived; the rest is being slowly absorbed by the forest. There is something genuinely affecting about standing in the empty shell of what was once the first university in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The site is unfenced and accessible at any time, but it is on the edge of a working harbour district — go in daylight, ideally with a local guide, and watch your footing on the broken floors.
