Souk el Attarine is the perfume and spice market of the Tunis medina, running alongside the Zitouna Mosque in the heart of the oldest part of the city. The narrow covered lane is one of the most atmospheric in the medina — small shops hung with amber, musk, and rose-water extracts, vendors grinding spices by hand, and shafts of dusty light from the latticed roof above.
Beyond perfume and spices, the souk spills into Souk el Leffa (wool merchants), Souk des Chéchias (the distinctive red felt hats), and Souk el Berka (once the slave market, now dealing in gold and silver jewellery). The medina souks are organised by trade — if you understand the logic you can navigate; if you don't, you will get pleasantly lost. Either outcome is satisfactory.
