The Royal Palace complex dates from 1866 and remains the official residence of the King of Cambodia. The Throne Hall, with its soaring spire and elaborate murals, is the centrepiece. Most of the palace grounds are open to visitors, though the royal residence itself is off limits.
The Silver Pagoda, within the same compound, is the real draw. Its floor is covered with more than 5,000 silver tiles, and it houses a life-size gold Buddha encrusted with 9,584 diamonds along with a green crystal Emerald Buddha from the 17th century. The surrounding gallery features a 600-metre mural depicting scenes from the Ramayana, recently restored.
Dress modestly — knees and shoulders must be covered. Mornings are quieter.
