Vann Molyvann House

Modernist family villa of Cambodia's most important post-war architect

The house that Vann Molyvann designed for his own family in 1966 is one of the clearest expressions of his theory: tropical modernism rooted in Khmer tradition. The split-level concrete villa is raised on pilotis to catch the breeze, with louvered walls, a fish pond beneath the living room and a roof terrace facing the river.

The house is in private hands but visible from the street, and occasionally opened for tours by the Vann Molyvann Project — a research initiative that has been mapping and trying to save his rapidly disappearing buildings. Worth a stop after Olympic Stadium for anyone interested in twentieth-century architecture.
