Wat Langka

Riverside pagoda that hosts public meditation sessions in English

One of Phnom Penh's five original wats, founded in 1422 to house sacred Buddhist scriptures and named for a historical link with Sri Lankan monks (Langka being the Khmer name for the island). Quieter than the nearby Royal Palace, with elaborate murals along the inner walls of the sanctuary and a constant flow of saffron-robed students from its monastic school.

The wat is unusual in welcoming foreigners to its meditation sessions, held in English on Monday and Thursday evenings. Even outside meditation hours, the courtyard is a peaceful spot to step away from the heat of Sihanouk Boulevard. Remove shoes and dress modestly when entering the prayer hall.
