Russian Market (Phsar Toul Tom Poung)

Tin-roofed warren of stalls famed for clothing, handicrafts and lunch

Officially Phsar Toul Tom Poung, but known to everyone as the Russian Market — a name dating to the 1980s when Soviet expatriates came here to shop. It is far more atmospheric than Phsar Thmei: a low, dim labyrinth of tin-roofed alleys packed with stalls selling handicrafts, silks, silver jewellery, antiques (real and otherwise), and overruns from the Cambodian garment factories.

The food court along the eastern edge is one of the best lunch stops in the city. Iced coffee, num banh chok, fish amok, and pork rice plates cost a dollar or two. Bring cash and small US dollar notes — vendors prefer them to riel for anything under a few thousand riel.
