APOPO Visitor Center

APOPO's Visitor Center is attached to their demining headquarters near Siem Reap International Airport and offers a direct, engaging look at one of the most unusual conservation and development projects in Southeast Asia. APOPO trains African giant pouched rats to detect landmines by smell — the rats identify TNT and then signal by scratching at the spot. Cambodia remains one of the most heavily mined countries in the world (a legacy of decades of conflict), and APOPO's rats have cleared large areas of land that was previously unusable by rural communities.

Visitors can watch the rats being trained and learn about the demining process. The centre also covers the broader history of landmines in Cambodia — connecting directly to the work of the Cambodia Landmine Museum further north. The visit is hands-on and well-explained, and children in particular tend to find the rats captivating. Entrance proceeds support the demining operation.

A story
APOPO's demining rats — African giant pouched rats — are trained using operant conditioning to detect TNT. A rat can clear 200 square metres in 20 minutes; a human with a metal detector takes four days. The rats are too light to trigger the mines they find, which makes them safe for the work. APOPO calls them HeroRATs and they have cleared more than 13,000 mines and explosive remnants in Cambodia since operations began.
