Vimean Sokha Museum

The Vimean Sokha Museum is an eccentric and entirely personal collection: antique electronics, wind-up clocks, vintage cameras, early motorcycles and bicycles, old radios, and miscellaneous mechanical curiosities, all gathered over decades by a Cambodian collector and displayed in his family compound. The collection spans roughly 1920 to 1970 and reflects the particular history of Cambodia's relationship with foreign technology during the colonial and post-independence periods.

This is not a conventional museum — there are no explanatory labels, the organisation is idiosyncratic, and the whole experience depends on engaging with the owner or family member who shows you around. But if you have any affection for old machines or the material culture of the mid-20th century, it is one of the most interesting hour in Siem Reap. Admission is by donation.
