Zhenwu Temple

Quanzhou Taoist temple tied to the city’s maritime and Song-era history

Zhenwu Temple is one of Quanzhou's smaller but meaningful religious sites, associated with the Taoist deity Zhenwu and the old maritime city that traded across the Indian Ocean. Its value is partly in how it broadens Quanzhou beyond the better-known mosques, pagodas, and bridges.

The temple is best seen as part of the city's wider port heritage. Quanzhou's World Heritage story is built from many such pieces: shrines, guild halls, docks, and religious sites that show how merchants and sailors made the city unusually cosmopolitan.
