Zhongshan Road

Zhongshan Road is the commercial and ceremonial spine of Quanzhou's old town, a kilometre-long street lined with late-Qing and early Republican era shophouses whose covered arcades are a distinctive feature of Fujian coastal architecture. Unlike many Chinese historic commercial streets that have been sanitised into tourist zones, Zhongshan Road still operates as a working commercial street — hardware shops, fabric merchants, tea sellers, and traditional medicine dispensaries alongside the newer cafes and souvenir shops.

The architecture is remarkably intact along several blocks: two-storey shophouses with colonnaded ground floors, red-brick facades, and carved wood details. The southern end of the street meets the old city gate area, and several lanes off it lead to the old Muslim quarter near the Qingjing Mosque. The street is at its liveliest in the evening, when locals do their shopping and eat at the night market stalls that set up around the old stone-paved sections.
