The Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall stands on Dongfeng Road in the heart of Guangzhou, occupying the site of the Presidential Office where Sun Yat-sen served as the first leader of the Republic of China. Completed in 1931, the building is a landmark example of Chinese revivalist architecture: an enormous octagonal structure topped with a blue-tiled dome and traditional upturned eaves, combining Western engineering with classical Chinese aesthetics.
The main hall has a capacity of 5,000 and is still used for major civic performances, including concerts and political events. The surrounding grounds are planted with ancient kapok trees and include statues and memorials. The building is of particular importance in Guangzhou, where Sun Yat-sen lived, worked, and organised the Nationalist movement — the city regards him as a local hero as much as a national founding figure.
