Foraminifera Sculpture Park

The Foraminifera Sculpture Park, on the south-eastern edge of the city, is unlike anything else in China — and possibly anywhere else. Dozens of large stone and concrete sculptures, each up to several metres high, reproduce the shells of foraminifera species in painstaking accuracy. Walking among them is genuinely otherworldly: spirals, chambers, and reticulated patterns that look at first glance like the work of an architect with a sense of humour.

The park is set in landscaped grounds with explanatory panels in Chinese; bring a translation app if you want the details. Entry is free. It is well off the standard tourist route and rewards the effort to reach it.

A story
Foraminifera are microscopic single-celled marine organisms whose ornate calcium-carbonate shells are normally invisible to the naked eye. The Zhongshan sculpture park, opened in 2009, blows them up to the scale of cars and houses — the brainchild of the late micropaleontologist Zheng Shouyi, who wanted to celebrate the beauty of an organism the rest of the world ignores.
