Zhongshan Park, also called Yantai Garden, occupies a low hill in the centre of the Shiqi district. Paved paths climb through subtropical trees to a pavilion at the top — modest by the standards of Chinese mountain parks, but useful as a quick escape from the surrounding streets and a good place to watch dawn tai chi.
At the foot of the hill are a small zoo, a children's play area, and ornamental lakes. The chrysanthemum festival in October–November fills the park's lower lawns with hundreds of cultivated varieties — the show has run since the early twentieth century and is one of the city's signature events.
