Sun Yat-sen Former Residence

The Sun Yat-sen Former Residence Memorial Museum in Cuiheng — a village twenty-five kilometres south-east of the Zhongshan city centre — is the single most-visited site in the city and the reason many Chinese travellers come at all. The complex centres on the two-storey grey-brick house Sun built in 1892 for his mother with money sent home from Hawaii. The house contains original furniture, family photographs, and the bed in which he slept on his visits home.

Around the house has grown a substantial museum complex covering Sun's life, the 1911 Revolution, and the early Republican period. Don't miss the recreated Cuiheng of the 1860s — a small open-air village showing what the place looked like in his childhood. Entry is free; the museum closes Mondays.

A story
Sun Yat-sen was born in 1866 in a modest farmhouse in Cuiheng village, the son of a poor farmer. He left for Hawaii at thirteen to live with an elder brother, encountered Western political ideas, and returned with a vision that would topple the Qing dynasty fifty years later. The two-storey house he later built for his mother on the same spot still stands.
