Zhongshan is a city of about 3.5 million in Guangdong province, on the western side of the Pearl River Delta between Guangzhou and Zhuhai. It is named after Sun Yat-sen — "Zhongshan" is the Chinese name for the revolutionary leader who was born in the village of Cuiheng, now part of the city, in 1866. Sun Yat-sen is revered across both mainland China and Taiwan as the founding father of modern China, and his birthplace draws a steady flow of visitors.
The city is known within China for manufacturing: it produces a large share of the country's locks, lamps, clothing, and electronics. For visitors, the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall and the Sun Yat-sen Former Residence at Cuiheng Village are the principal draws. The city also has a quiet old quarter and a reputation for Cantonese cuisine, particularly its distinctive Shiqi roast pigeon and local style of dim sum.
