Zhongshan Road Night Market

Zhongshan Road is Nanning's oldest commercial street and the city's most concentrated stretch of street food after dark. The road and its neighbouring alleys run through Xingning District, and the covered night market section fills with vendors selling the full range of Nanning's snack culture: laoyoufen (rice noodles in fermented-bamboo broth), barbecued skewers of everything from quail eggs to pig intestine, steamed sticky rice parcels, and the sour-sweet drinks made from tamarind and sour plum that are peculiar to the Guangxi lowlands.

The market dates to the Republican period, when Zhongshan Road was laid out as part of the city's modernisation, and the surrounding blocks retain some of the arcaded shophouse architecture of that era — a style shared with Vietnam and southern Guangdong. The market becomes serious business after 8pm and runs past midnight. Come hungry and prepared to point at things without knowing exactly what they are.
