Wolong Temple

1700-year-old "Reclining Dragon" temple, still a working monastery

A working Chan Buddhist monastery on a quiet side street inside the city walls, founded in the 4th century and named for a Han-dynasty stone carving of a reclining dragon that was found on the site. The temple has none of the polish or crowd of the city's tourist sights — courtyards of weathered red walls, monks chanting in the late afternoon, and an enormous bronze bell that you can sometimes hear from the Stele Forest a few blocks away. Free to enter; quiet and worth twenty minutes of wandering between bigger sights.
