Xishan — "Western Hills" — district runs along the western side of central Kunming and continues out to the Western Hills park proper. It is largely residential — middle-class apartment blocks built since the 1990s — but contains a couple of important sights: Daguan Park on its eastern edge, the Bamboo Temple in the hills behind, and the Western Hills park itself with the Dragon Gate at the top.
The eastern shore of Dianchi Lake, accessible by metro Line 3, is the most-visited slice of the district. Most foreign visitors come through Xishan on the way to the hills or the lake, rather than to look at the district itself.
