Jinma and Biji Archways

The Golden Horse and Jade Rooster archways — Jinma Pailou and Biji Pailou — face each other across the southern end of Jinbi Square, in the very centre of the old town. The pair were first built in the Ming dynasty as twin commemorative arches and have given the surrounding district its name (Jin-Bi) ever since. The current arches were rebuilt in 1999 after the originals were demolished in the 1960s, but they are well-made and stand on the original site.

The arches are the heart of Kunming nightlife. The square between them is the pedestrian centre of the city, with shopping streets running off in every direction and the rebuilt district around the East and West Pagodas to the south. In the evening the arches are lit and the surrounding restaurants and bars fill quickly.

A story
Once every sixty years, late in the lunar eighth month, the setting sun strikes one archway just as the rising full moon strikes the other, and their shadows meet in the middle of the road. The alignment was last observed on the night of 6 September 1981. The next will be in 2041.
